As the first Cuban-American player in the National Hockey League, Montoya is currently the Vice President of Cultural Growth and Strategy for the Dallas Stars. Growing stars and playing hockey with underserved communities, both domestically and abroad, are causes close to Montoya’s heart.

“We just got back from a trip to Mexico City and we’ll be going back there soon,” Montoya stated. “For us, it’s really an opportunity to showcase what we’re doing and get our message across.”

The takeaway is that anyone can enjoy playing hockey. Their intention is to reach kids who might not otherwise hear that message.

“We started a program called Learn to Play. For children aged four to ten, Mexico City offers a six-week program. They will graduate from the program in May, having begun in April. This is an opportunity to introduce play to them. Give them the opportunity to play and do what we love so much, Montoya remarked.

The initiative, run in collaboration with the National Hockey League, involves fifty children.Locally, Montoya has partnered on the Free Future Stars initiative with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas, bringing hockey to local schools and facilities. From two locations in 2023 to nine locations in 2024, the Future Stars program has expanded. activities in underprivileged areas are given equipment and help to run weekly youth hockey activities.

The group mentioned how much more fan interaction and community outreach are boosted during the Stanley Cup playoffs. The 50/50 raffle’s fundraising efforts at home games were bolstered by increased attention and awareness. Half of the jackpot earnings go to the Dallas Stars Foundation, which improves North Texans’ quality of life by supporting youth hockey, community service, health, and education.
